WE TRIED IT: TRACY ANDERSON

July 7th, 2009

You’ve heard the buzz about this trainer to the stars, but one DVF staffer actually worked out with her! Read her first hand account of training with Tracy.

I will have to start off by saying that there isn’t a diet, cleanse or exercise program I haven’t tried. Blueprint? Check! I lasted 2 days before the need for solids took over. Bikram Yoga? Loved it for about 2 weeks until the smell of sweat in the studio sent me running. And I kept on running 4 or 5 miles a day, I thought amazing! I will melt my fat like Renee Zellweger did post-Bridget Jones! But it wasn’t until I met Tracy Anderson that I felt like I have truly found my match. She tsked tsked me when I told her that I had been hitting the treadmill daily. Apparently I was doing the same rotations over and over again, and was only bulking up my muscles instead of redesigning my muscles into tiny dancers ones.

So here I am on week two of working out at the newly opened Tracy Anderson Method studio in Tribeca and I am hooked. Note this is not a traditional gym, there is not a treadmill or thigh abductor machine in sight. Instead there are metal cubes that hang from the ceiling, a bunch of rolling rack-like equipment strewn about one room, and a big dance studio in the other. The first hour is weight training using your own body weight and dangling in different ways from the cubes and rolling racks. Cardio is an hour of dance - 25 different dances actually. I felt silly the first time I did the “punch punch” but this is the same work out that got Gwyneth her defined legs.

In the last two weeks I have pushed my limits, learned to dance and have found myself jumping out of bed at 6:30am so I can work out for 2 hours. But if you can’t make it to her studio, her DVD’s are also amazing, especially the mat one.
