International Women’s Day was yesterday, so to keep the celebration going, we’re kicking off our “Proud to be Woman” Conversation Series, where we ask women from around the world what inspires them and what makes them “Proud to be Woman” or PTBW.

First up: Christiane Amanpour, who wrote to us while reporting from Afghanistan…

What inspires you? I am inspired by the women, the children and the men I meet in the crises and wars I cover, who rise above the horror and indignity, to somehow summon the courage and energy not to hate, not to despair, not to give in. I am inspired by those who live, and sometimes are willing to die, for social justice.
What makes you proud to be a woman? I am most proud to be raising a beautiful, brilliant, kind and loving son who I know will grow up committed to making the world a better place. And I am proud to keep trying to pursue the truth, and speak truth to power, without fear nor favor.
What are you celebrating this month? This month I am celebrating people who are building schools for girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and wherever girls are denied education. They know that the world will never prosper if women and girls cannot.
