PROUD TO BE WOMAN: DIANE SAWYER
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Diane Sawyer

Legendary television journalist Diane Sawyer and co-host of Good Morning America continues our proud to be woman series by telling us what inspires her and why she is proud to be a woman.

What makes you proud to be woman?
The fierce bravery of women. And the helpless laughter. And the endlessly dopey dreams and bad hair days and sighs into the mirror. And the feeling we have that only other women can understand the feelings we have. And knowing all the things we will defend to the death without blinking an eye.

And what I read—that , like birds, we fly faster information than any one of us can fly alone.

What are you celebrating this month?
My 21st wedding anniversary . I never wanted to marry. He never planned on me. We were victims of a very very kind joke played on us by Fate —on a day it was feeling mushy.

What inspires you?
Mothers . And Fathers. The sacrifice, the selfless love. The light appearing in the eyes of billions of humans all over the planet every time they look at the face of their child. More light even than the sun shining down on them.

ARIES

March 20 – April 18

Urgent as certain matters seem, you owe it to yourself to review recent unexpected opportunities and personal insights. These were triggered by the recent Aries New Moon, and clarify what works, what doesn’t and what you’d like more of. This way, when you actually must make decisions about those seemingly pressing situations, you’ll know exactly what you want to do.

TAURUS

April 19 — May 19

Confusion with others and seemingly unfair reversals in existing arrangements are about highlighting problems of which you’re unaware. Understand that, and instead of being annoyed, you’ll begin asking questions. Some answers come swiftly, others take time. But in every case, as these unravel restrictive beliefs or commitments, they lead you towards those that could be far more profitable.

GEMINI

May 20 — June 20

Don’t allow your affection for certain individual or concepts mean that, out of enthusiasm, you make unwise promises. Instead, focus on exploration, whether the setting is personal or professional. Ironically, the franker and more in depth your discussions are, the more you’re likely to achieve. When obstacles arise, do the minimum, then return your focus to those more promising objectives.

CANCER

June 21 — July 21

There isn’t an ideal way to deal with the events currently reshaping how you and those closest live. So instead of endlessly seeking something reliable, adopt an adventuresome approach and encourage others to, as well. At minimum, you’ll learn from every experience. Better yet, the fun you have discovering a wider world of options and meeting new people restores your optimism.

LEO

July 22 — August 21

Tempting as it is to make up your mind based on the scarce facts you have, you’d regret it. Instead, invest time in meandering discussions and, when unexpected paths appear, take them. What’s least expected will introduce you to the ideas or individual central to the next chapter of your life. Once that’s taken place, there’ll be no question what’s next.

VIRGO

August 22 — September 21

Others are facing serious practical, financial or business difficulties. Obviously, you’re wondering if these aren’t because of their unwise decisions. Actually, things aren’t nearly that clear cut, as forthright questions reveal. What you learn also brings to mind helpful ideas, some of which you suggest to others. However, those of greatest significance you put into action quietly, in the background.

LIBRA

September 22 — October 22

Being the zodiac’s diplomat, you’d think you’d have found a discreet way to deal with tensions on the domestic or partnership front. These are increasingly pressing, so now require a more forthright approach. Once you’re actually talking things over, others will be as relieved as you. So much they’ll give way to demands that, only recently, they’d have battled.

SCORPIO

October 23 — November 21

Exposing upsetting dilemmas will do nobody any good. Or so you think. However, destiny seems to have another view on the matter, since several such situations are being brought to light. And all at once. Dire as this seems, these revelations result in conversations that aren’t just informative, you realise others are better equipped to cope than you imagined.

SAGITTARIUS

November 22 — December 20

You’ve avoided tackling tedious business or financial matters, especially because they involve people or projects you care about. However, these are now pressing. So plunge in, conscious that you’ll have to gather facts as you proceed. This may at times be hard work, but both the knowledge you gain and what you accomplish more than justifies the effort involved.

CAPRICORN

December 21 – January 18

Ordinarily you’re the first to acknowledge and deal with even serious challenges. But either you’ve been anxious about these, so put them off or been short of facts. Or both. Now events urge you into action, which means you must ask questions as you proceed. Daunting as this seems initially, you’re soon confident enough to do what you must.

AQUARIUS

January 19 — February 17

While you’re by no means arrogant, once you’ve made a decision you tend to stick to it, whatever anybody says. Doing that now isn’t just unwise, with so much around you changing, it could lead to serious problems. So explore what seems impractical, heed others’ advice and take chances. The resulting experiences will broaden your horizon, just when it’s needed.

PISCES

February 18 — March 19

Being tough isn’t easy, especially with those you care about. But events demand exactly that. So forget worries they’ll be upset. Often their dramas are just ways of avoiding what must be done, and you indulge them. So important as tackling the actual dilemmas involved may be, the frank discussions you have about persistent problems could eliminate them for good.

PROUD TO BE WOMAN: ALYSE NELSON

Alyse Bloom

Alyse Bloom

We continue our “Proud to be Woman” conversation series with Alyse Nelson, President, CEO and co-founder of Vital Voices.

What inspires you?
The women leaders around the world that I have the privilege of working with through my organization continuously inspire me.  Although it is our mission at Vital Voices to support them and raise them up, I am humbled and inspired everyday by their strength, tenacity and grace. They have taught me important life lessons and have shaped the way I see the world.  They have taught me that leadership is not a final destination.  It is not about the title you hold, or how many people report to you. Real leadership is about the actions that you take on a daily basis. It is about standing up and leading change from wherever you are, with what little resources you have.

What makes you proud to be a woman?
I think that women have an innate ability to connect and find common ground.  We are able to cross the lines that typically divide us – whether they are cultural, religious, generational, socio-economic or geographic divides.  I have seen women in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Africa and even in my own country put their differences aside and seek commonalities to bring about positive change in their communities.  At the end of the day, we all want the same thing – a better future for our children.

What are you celebrating this month?
On March 19th, my organization honored five extraordinary women leaders from around the world at our annual leadership awards program.  This month, I am celebrating each of those women for improving our world:  Sadiqa Basiri Saleem, a young woman from Afghanistan who is leading a quiet revolution in her country by building schools and educating thousands of girls; Temituokpe Esisi, a Nigerian entrepreneur who is investing the profits from her business into bettering her community; Somaly Mam, a survivor of human trafficking and fearless activist working to combat this gross human rights violation; and Marceline Kongolo-Bice and Chouchou Namegabe Nabintu, two women from the Democratic Republic of Congo who are standing up and risking their lives by speaking out against rape as a weapon of war in Eastern Congo.

I am also celebrating our new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  She has been a tireless advocate for women’s political, social and economic progress around the world for more than fifteen years.  I admire her because she took on this cause long before it was deemed popular.

When I was just 21 years old, I heard her speak in Beijing at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.  At that gathering of 55,000 women leaders from around the world she declared that “human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights.” Since that memorable day, she has traveled to more the 80 countries around the world to stand by her commitment to women. She has used her powerful voice to speak for those who have no voice, and in doing so she has raised the issues affecting the lives of women and girls to the world stage.

She has inspired me and many others to use what voice and power we have to empower others.  I can only imagine what she will do to build on this legacy as Secretary of State.

Stephanie in the Zaria Jacket

Stephanie in the Zaria Jacket

This week’s winner is Stephanie Hudey, a student from Sarasota, Florida! She sent in a photo of herself wearing the Zaria jacket, one of our favorite pieces from the Spring 2009 Rock Goddess collection (it’s also the same jacket Jessica Alba wore on the cover of Elle).

“This jacket is so great. I can wear it day or night and pair it with jeans to dress it down. Soo worth the splurge.”

Don’t believe her? Well it’s true. We’ve seen people in the office dressing it up, down, and wearing it out on the town. It is truly a jacket that goes the distance. And it’s still available at DVF shops.
