ARCHIVE FOR January, 2009

STARS WEEK FEBRUARY 1
Saturday, January 31st, 2009

ARIES

March 20 – April 18

Hopefully you’ve already realised that with almost daily changes in circumstances, even the simplest of plans should be regarded as tentative. This has slowed your pace. But you’ve also had extra time, enough to explore ideas and meet people. Add your ruler Mars’ move into the innovative Aquarius on Wednesday, and suddenly your life’s brimming with intriguing new ventures.

TAURUS

April 19 — May 19

Unsettling as changes in your work or lifestyle are, they’re actually helping you to keep up with the rather dramatic developments triggered by last week’s eclipsed New Moon. However, don’t start reorganising things just yet. Continue to explore your options until after the second eclipse, on February 9th, brings yet more unexpected events. Only then should you begin making plans for the future.

GEMINI

May 20 — June 20

It hasn’t been the minor errors you’ve been wrestling with since your ruler Mercury went retrograde, on the 11th, that have been the problem. It’s those more shadowy doubts you haven’t know how to deal with. While Mercury resumes forward motion today, ending this chaos, you’ll find it’s worth your while to invest time in exploring, and conquering, those inner issues.

CANCER

June 21 — July 21

Rarely has there been so much going on the heavens, so if elements of your own life and the world around you are in flux, it’s no surprise. Resist the temptation to impose order as swiftly as possible. Not only are these changes due to continue for another week, some of what seems most worrying could actually prove to be hugely beneficial.

LEO

July 22 — August 21

Urgent as certain decisions seem, you’re better off keeping arrangements loose. Things remain in transition, both in your own life and in situations around you. Of greatest importance, however, will be the radical change in your perspective on life, relationships and your goals triggered by the Leo eclipsed Full Moon on February 9th. Only after that should you consider making lasting arrangements.

VIRGO

August 22 — September 21

If things just don’t add up, it’s no surprise. The current unsettling planetary activity has triggered changes in the world around you and in your own life, some welcome, others not so. Consequently you’ll be relieved that your ruler Mercury finally ends its retrograde cycle today, not only bringing once elusive facts likely to surface, but your confidence should also reappear.

LIBRA

September 22 — October 22

Confusing and, often, unfair as the changes you’re contending with seem, make no decisions just yet. The actual circumstances involved are still in transition, and some of what’s currently unwelcome could turn out wonderfully. Ironically, those changes you’re forced to make could actually turn out better than anything you’d planned or expected, although during this week you’ll be completed mystified how.

SCORPIO

October 23 — November 21

No amount of clever analysis will yield the insights necessary to understand, or control, the current tide of confusing events. Understand that and instead of worrying, you’ll adopt a philosophical approach. Doing nothing may seem weak now. But when things are clearer, in about a week’s time, you’ll realise how easily you could have drawn the wrong conclusion, and made regrettable decisions.

SAGITTARIUS

November 22 — December 20

However much of hurry you’re in, over the coming week you’re better off adopting a more measured pace. That allows you to adjust to the changes triggered by eclipses, last week and next, and Mercury finally ending its retrograde cycle today. The resulting chaos may be disruptive in the short term but, in the long run, promises numerous welcome breakthroughs.

CAPRICORN

December 21 – January 18

Everybody will be relieved when Mercury ends its retrograde cycle on Sunday. But as it’s in your sign and has been behind both personal confusion and issues with others, you’ll be particularly pleased. Still, invest time in considering what you’ve learned as a result of these conflicts, and instead of merely saying farewell to dilemmas, you’ll also profit from them.

AQUARIUS

January 19 — February 17

Recent events made you realise certain changes need to be made but you weren’t sure where to begin. The arrival of Mars in Aquarius, on Wednesday, kick-starts a cycle of personal assessment and dynamic action. Urgent as certain situations seem, take it slowly. You’ve plenty of time to consider what you’re happy with, what you’re not and the direction you’re going.

PISCES

February 18 — March 19

Obviously you’d rather not be at odds with others. Ironically, the issues triggered by Thursday’s clash between Saturn and Uranus, which is in your sign, prove so revealing that it’s worth dealing with the tensions involved. Tackle each with an inquisitive attitude, encouraging others to do the same, and you’ll not only learn a lot, you’ll create a powerful new accord

SPRING AHEAD
Friday, January 30th, 2009

It seems like forever since our Spring 2009 runway show, and the moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here: Rock Goddess has landed on DVF.com. And what a breath of fresh air it is! It makes us want to banish all our sweaters and jeans in favor of silk jumpsuits and kaftan dresses. We know we must pace ourselves, but there are certain items we just can’t help but order asap (because we just have a hunch they might not be around for long). Here our the Top 5 to buy now…

Hippolyte dress in white (a must).

Fantasia blouse in black (our top top).

Carolette jumpsuit in snowdrop (need we say more?)

Palma dress in patchwork (flirty and floor length).

Damani dress in camel (a safari shift).

Pre-order the Spring 2009 collection…

Harem pant now...

Harem pants now...

Though we’ve come a long way baby, one of Spring’s biggest trends recalls a time when men had group wives and ladies belly danced their way up the ladder. Yes, we are speaking of the harem pant. Though they had a brief renaissance in the 80s – thanks to MC Hammer – this season’s shape is more refined and relevant. The Allen pant is DVF’s answer to the look (and featured in this month’s Lucky).

...and later
…and later

They showed them now (with boots and a cropped jacket) and later (with a pretty bright-colored tank and sandals).

We’ve received a ton of calls about these pants already (they should land in stores mid February), and you know what that means…

Call to reserve your pair…

Palihouse pic

There’s an unsaid saying in New York that once a spot gets written about in the NY Times Style section, it might good as well be over, or at least over capacity, meaning good chance getting any type of reservation. This holds especially true for the Boite section, which profiles exactly that, a newish place to wine and/or dine. So when we saw the blip about LA’s Palihouse hotel, bar, restaurant – what have you – we were intrigued. Even more so by the fact that someone else had mentioned it just a week’s prior as the best place they’d been since before the Back Room got discovered.

So, DVF answered the call and it did, as the NYT described, remind us of a loft in NYC. But the kind of loft that has worn in club chairs, a DJ desk – not booth – and other flea market-esque finds that have been spruced up for general consumption. Speaking of consumption, The Hall brasserie didn’t dissapoint either. The raw bar was fresh, the salads hearty (it is L.A. after all) and the macaroni gratin was beyond.

But despite all the buzz and the requisite woman with clipboard at the front, the entire experience was suprisingly low-key.

What: Palihouse, 8465 Halloway Drive, West Hollywood
Wear: Hazelle Top in Canvas or Brygid Dress in blue and white
